“I Warned Everyone I Was a Terrible Grandma”: I Couldn’t Handle 2 Kids, Ruined the Vacation, and Forced the Other Grandparents to Step In

I have two grandkids: Emily, who is 9, and Jake, who is 6. To be completely honest, babysitting them isn’t something I enjoy. Their parents, my son and his wife, are perfectly capable of handling things on their own. I raised my son as a single mother, and the endless responsibilities wore me out. In my younger years, I wasn’t exactly a beauty queen, so I settled for the first guy who showed me any attention and ended up pregnant. It was a different era back then. Naturally, he disappeared as soon as he found out.

When my son asked if I could watch Emily and Jake for a week while they went on a much-needed vacation, I reluctantly agreed. I warned them that I wasn’t cut out for this, but they assured me everything would be fine. They even left detailed instructions and emergency contacts. Still, I had a bad feeling about it.

The first day was a disaster. Emily wanted to go to the park while Jake insisted on staying home to play video games. I tried to compromise by suggesting we all go to the park for an hour and then come back home, but neither of them was happy with that plan. Emily sulked the entire time at the park, and Jake threw a tantrum when we got back because he had missed his favorite show.

By the second day, I was already exhausted. Emily had a meltdown because she couldn’t find her favorite doll, and Jake refused to eat anything that wasn’t chicken nuggets. I tried calling my son for advice, but he didn’t pick up. They were probably enjoying their vacation without a care in the world.

On the third day, things took a turn for the worse. Emily got into a fight with a neighbor’s kid at the park, and Jake accidentally broke a window while playing baseball in the backyard. I was at my wit’s end. I called my son’s in-laws in desperation, hoping they could take over for a few days. They agreed, but not without expressing their disappointment in me.

When they arrived to pick up Emily and Jake, I could see the judgment in their eyes. They didn’t say much, but their disapproval was palpable. I felt like a complete failure.

The rest of the week was a blur of guilt and relief. My son’s in-laws managed to keep the kids entertained and out of trouble, something I clearly couldn’t do. When my son and his wife returned from their vacation, they were grateful to their in-laws but didn’t say much to me. I could tell they were disappointed.

I had warned everyone that I wasn’t cut out for this, but no one listened. Now, I’ve ruined a vacation and strained family relationships even further. Maybe some people are just not meant to be grandparents.
